Practical answers to the socket problems UK households run into most often, from plugs that foul on the skirting board to furniture that will not sit flush against the wall.

Why do UK plug cables come out of the bottom of the plug?

The BS 1363 three-pin plug was designed with the cable exiting downward to discourage people from unplugging appliances by yanking the cable, which can loosen the connections inside the plug.

The side effect is that every appliance cable is forced toward the floor. That is why plugs clash with skirting boards and carpets, why furniture will not sit flush against a wall socket, and why bulky moulded plugs block neighbouring sockets on extension leads. If you need the cable to run upward instead, an inverted plug adaptor such as PLUGGY flips the socket input 180° without any rewiring.

Can you plug a UK plug in upside down?

Not directly. The earth pin, shutter mechanism, and pin layout of a BS 1363 socket mean a UK plug only fits one way up.

My socket is too close to the skirting board and the plug will not fit. What can I do?

This is one of the most common socket complaints in UK homes: older sockets mounted low on the wall leave no room for the deep body of a modern moulded plug, which fouls on the skirting board or carpet before the pins seat.

There are three fixes. A spacer or deeper pattress box brings the socket face out from the wall by around 10 to 12 mm, which is sometimes enough. An electrician can re-fix the socket higher up the wall. Or an inverted plug adaptor turns the plug the other way up, so the plug body sits above the socket instead of below it, clearing the skirting entirely with no tools or rewiring.

How do I plug something in behind a sofa or wardrobe?

A standard UK plug plus the downward bend of its cable needs several centimetres of clearance, so furniture pushed against a socket either crushes the cable or stands off the wall.

If the problem is depth, an adaptor will not solve it. PLUGGY sits slightly further out from the wall than a bare plug, so for a flusher fit the honest options are slimline or flat plugs (limited, because the fuse inside a BS 1363 plug sets a minimum depth), having an electrician hardwire the appliance through a fused connection unit, or moving or recessing the socket.

How much does it cost to move a plug socket in the UK?

UK trade cost guides for 2026 put a straightforward socket relocation at roughly £80 to £250, depending on distance, wall construction, and whether replastering is needed. Many electricians also charge a call-out fee of around £50 to £80.

Socket work must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations, and only a qualified electrician can test and certify it. If the only reason to move a socket is plug clearance, whether behind furniture or above a skirting board, a compliant adaptor is a much cheaper first thing to try.

Is it legal to mount a UK socket upside down?

BS 7671 (the UK wiring regulations) has no rule that names socket orientation, but that does not make inverting a socket a good idea. The regulations require equipment to be installed in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, and UK sockets are designed, marked, and tested for one orientation, with the earth pin at the top.

So we do not recommend having a socket remounted upside down. If what you actually want is the cable exiting toward the ceiling, an inverted plug adaptor gives you that on a normally mounted socket, with no rewiring at all.

Can I plug an electric heater into an extension lead?

No. UK fire services consistently warn against it: portable heaters can draw up to 3,000 watts, run for long periods, and can overheat an extension lead until the socket melts and catches fire. A heater should always go directly into a wall socket.

If the reason for the extension lead is that the wall socket itself is awkward, blocked by furniture or too close to the floor for the heater plug, fix the access instead. An inverted adaptor lets the plug seat properly in the wall socket where it would otherwise foul, keeping the heater on the mains socket where it belongs.

How can I fit more plugs into an extension lead?

The usual blocker is not the number of sockets but the shape of the plugs: bulky moulded plugs and downward-pointing cables overlap the neighbouring socket, so a 4-way lead only takes two or three plugs.

Choose extension leads with wider socket spacing where you can, never daisy-chain leads, and keep the total load under the lead’s 13-amp rating. For the overlap problem itself, an inverted plug adaptor turns a plug the other way up so adjacent plugs face in opposite directions and stop clashing.

What can I do about the plug sticking out behind a wall-mounted TV?

The tidy long-term fix is to have an electrician fit a recessed socket directly behind the TV, with the cable run buried or protected in line with BS 7671. Painted trunking is the usual budget alternative.

What is BS 1363-3 and why does it matter for plug adaptors?

BS 1363-3 is the part of the British Standard for 13-amp plugs and sockets that covers adaptors. It sets the safety requirements: shuttered outlets, fusing, earth continuity, temperature limits, and mechanical strength.

Cheap unbranded adaptors that skip these requirements are a known fire and shock risk, so it is worth checking for the standard before buying any adaptor. PLUGGY is BS 1363-3 compliant, and its earth connection passes through unaltered.
